For those who somehow missed it, Drake performed at Six Flags New England yesterday, July 3, and I went to the concert! So we have a giant picspam! And evidently, way too many exclamation points.
( 23 pictures, anyone? ) As we all stood there at five-thirty, waiting for the show to start, it began POURING, as opposed to sprinkling, which it had started doing about a half-hour earlier. That was when I made my first voice post. Seriously, I have never been so wet in my life. It sucked so much.
The show was scheduled to start at 6. It started at quarter to 7ish. But it did start, and I was behind two rows to see it--actually quite close, considering.
This is the opening group. They are called the Clique Girlz, and they are young. The music was okay--something I'd have liked when I was their age. I thought they were a little too "sexy"--and the fake-punk/emo look wasn't doing it for me. They weren't the worst thing ever, or the best.
I know, this looks like nothing. It's actually my first glimpse of Drake. See right above the bottom joint in the stairs? That's Drake’s head. You probably can't see, actually. But anyway, my second thought was, "Oh, you look like Drake! No glasses and no BEARD!" We’ll get to my first thought in a sec.
Here's a good time to get to that first thought, actually. "What a horrible shirt." It grew on me throughout the night, and I kind of like it now, but at the time? EW. His vest was fine, and I always thought it was. We'll get to the pants a little later.
He opened with "Up Periscope," one of my favorites, and the favorite of others on my flist too. Hence my middle voice post, sharing the Drake love and leaving us all wishing he was the captain of our submarines. Unfortunately, my camera batteries decided to die at that point. And then my spares--I think a lot of it was to do with the wetness of the camera. I eked out lots more pictures, and then I stole all 86 of Jen's--don’t worry, more picspam to come.
Then he went into "I Know." After that, I forget the order. It basically followed the course of It's Only Time, but there were extras, and no title track. (And none of these pictures actually match the song I talk about, so we're clear). He was really expressive, sometimes leading to weird faces. I have some examples coming up.
This one is still big because there's a really clear shot of his left forearm. I’m standing there and Jen's all, "I didn’t know he had a tattoo." First, I told her about Lennon's glasses on his back at least twice. Second, I thought that was his only tattoo, so I was all, "how did you see that?" She answers, "Look at his left arm." And there were giant words: war is over. I winced. "Drake, I agree with you, but you’re breaking my tattoo rule." And therubyone informed me today that he has a lot more than I thought--multiple Beatles-related on his back and an anchor somewhere else. He totally broke my tattoo rule.
I know that this one is bad. It's a lightened version, but it's still bad. It's the only one where he looks really happy though, as opposed to into his song. He was really cute all night--although he looked a little bit arrogant at times. He was actually really nice--he acted pretty modest most of the time, and he thanked us really sincerely for braving the rain. Jen said that he was probably told to be nice and modest. I'd like to think he would be anyway.
Here's the end of my pictures and the beginning of Jen's. This was probably taken during "Up Periscope." But we're past that in discussion. I've said it before and I'll say it again: I love his stage presence. Look at that.
Speaking of his gestures, at one point when he wasn't singing or playing during a song, I saw him squish/roll something between his fingers, examine it, then flick it away. (I was baffled, until Jen said he picked it off his arm. Ah, probably a bug.) Anyway, then he kind of looked up at us, shrugged and made an "oh well" kind of face, and picked up his cue to play. Oh Drake, you're adorable.
And oh Drake, you're hot. I really, really like this picture. Drake makes guitar-tuning sexy.
Okay, see that weird person off to the right with glasses, who looks really white from the flash? That's me. And Drake. The only reason that one is in this picspam. It's me and Drake!!11one! Lol…I wish that was a truer statement.
More of Drake being adorable (and modest): After a bunch of songs from "It's Only Time," he asked cautiously, "So how many of you have heard the album called Telegraph?" We all screamed. He looked a little bit surprised and answered, "Okay, so you know this one then," and launched into "Somehow." I get the idea that he really likes that song--or his label does. But it's okay, because I really like that song too. I was listening to Telegraph for the first time, and you know, Intro, Found a Way, blah blah blah--and suddenly, "she falls to her knees, screaming god please." I suddenly paid a lot more attention.
"Somehow" was the only song he played from Telegraph--except for "Found a Way" of course. After lots of songs, even one that I didn’t recognize (someone said it was a Beatles song. Something about blackbirds?) he finally leaned in and said, "Here's one I think you’ll know," and launched into "Found a Way". Everyone, even the little kids who were there because of Drake & Josh, sang along to that one. Drake defin tely sang "realign" though, and the audience sang "realize".
When he got to "no one cares what you give, you know you gotta live like you wanna live" he really leaned forward, as though he was telling us something important. Which he was.
And okay, I admit it--this picture is just funny. I don't know what Jen caught him in the middle of doing, but look at him.
OH. MY. GOD. Let's talk about the pants now, shall we? They were brown. And corduroy. And they hugged his butt and thighs so amazingly before flaring out at the bottom that OMG I almost died. I was a little embarrassed to tell Jen, "get a shot of his ass" after my camera died, but just LOOK. So worth it.
At the beginning of "Fool the World," they did a really slow, jazzy version with some saxophone. It was nice, but not my style. But then, "and I go to save the conversation I know…" was really upbeat and awesome. The whole audience started bobbing in place. I didn’t realize before, but a lot of Drake's songs are actually really danceable. I need to put some on and dance around my living room sometime.
See what I mean about weird faces? I love how into it Drake is.
Throughout the show, Drake drank (try saying that five times fast!) from that blue Solo cup. It sat next to an unopened bottle of water the whole time. So Drake, what were you drinking then, huh?
Seriously though, I don't think that he could have been drinking much and still singing--don't certain things mess up your voice
or your sobriety?
Another really nice shot--maybe I just have an unhealthy love for those corduroys. Or those shoes--didn't he wear similar ones on Drake & Josh a few times?
He played a couple new songs--he told us they were new, so I’m not confusing them for Beatles songs! I attempted to record them, but I was close to the front, and I think they could have had a tad less instruments and a tad more voice in their sound. The bass was intense. The recording didn't come out. I got an okay recording of "Found a Way," but that’s cause it was just Drake and an acoustic guitar.
When he launched into Fallen For You/Rusted Silhouette/Break Me Down, I knew it was drawing to a close. "Rusted Silhouette" is another of my favorites. I don't like Break Me Down, and Fallen for You is all right. And when I say I don't like something, it means I do, it's just not my favorite Drake-song. In the grand scheme of music? Yeah, I like it.
And he ended with "End it Good," of course! (That’s not a good picture, but it's the last one that was taken.) So here, have another picture, just because it's actually a good one:
There you all go! If you have any specific questions that I didn’t answer, just ask and I will, if you want bigger versions of something, tell me and I'll post them, and if you want to see more pictures…remind me in September when I'm in college and have high-speed access all the time. Jen and I took a combined 130, but I selected the best ones (or the ones I needed to make a point).
I also took a few videos, mostly 10 seconds or less because my camera kept shutting down. I combined them all into one 3 minute video. It MIGHT see the light of YouTube, depending on how my dial-up feels.
It was really a lot of fun, and he was totally worth standing in the rain for. I would so do it again, and if you have a chance to see Drake, DO IT!
